Ahnenforschung Grawert

The name Grawert troughout Europe’s history

A little detective story / attempt at family genealogy

This paper has two goals:

a) To write a little detective story, with assumptions about where we Grawert’s come from against a historical background. This should be a little more fun, than endless tables.
This history goes back to the 12th century. Grawert’s have played an important role in European societies every so often.

b) To do a bit of family history, but without huge family trees. I have proof of ten generations in my direct line.

The name of Grawert is relatively rare. My father once bought a book, in which all Grawert’s worldwide were supposed to be found. According to that there are 150 households in Germany and about 20 outside with that name.
This appears to be not far of the mark.
According to a German website verwandt.de there are 378 people in Germany with that name. Mostly in and around Berlin as well as the Baltic coast (Lübeck, Eutin, etc.).

Further on there is the version Gravert.
Manly in the area of the North Sea (north of Hamburg, Kremper Marsch etc.).

Gragert is supposed to be another version of Grawert.

There are other versions like Grauwert, Grawer, Grave etc. that could fall within family range.
During the middle ages until the 19th century town clerks were careless and ordinary people often could not read or write. There are families where the names of father and children differ from each other. Examples will follow.
